Preparing for winter!

OK it is the end of summer and some of us put away the grill until late spring. Here are some tips you can do to save yourself some costly replacements by doing a few things before putting it away.

1. Take the grills / grates off and store them inside. Moisture outside seems to wreek havoc on them and by the time you open your grill or smoker again it has rusted then you have to by a new one. If you don't want to store them in side then heavily douse them with cooking oil and placed in a plastic bag. you probably should clean off you grates before doing this. Just place them in your oven and put your oven on the cleaning cycle which will take care of all the crud on it.

2. Clean out the grill of all the ash and meat residue left over this will turn into a rock if left over the winter save yourself the headache and clear it out.

3. Once the grill or smoker is cleaned out you'll notice exposed metal sometimes because it flakes off from the heat. Spray it down with cooking spray.

4. Cover it up to help prevent any unnecessary moisture from intruding your grill.

5. If you use a Propane grill you can check for gas leaks using a soap and water combo that you can spray on the line and the burner and check for bubbles to show themselves once the gas has been turned on. If there is a leak then you know which piece to replace or fix by next grilling season. Thanks Lifehacker

From all the oils being used to to prevent rusts make sure to burn it off real good before using the grill next year. Get your grill super hot and keep it hot until it stops smoking this will clean off all the nasties and give a good first seasoning of the grill for the year.

If your like me then you'll want to just cover your grill because the maximum even during winter will be about two weeks before being used again.

Tell us your tips....
